Rhode Island
NECC is working with Rhode Island to convene key stakeholders and provide technical assistance in developing a statewide policy and related evidence-based practices on district-level parent and community engagement, with a focus on families of English language learners. The Center is also involved in supporting the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) as it coordinates efforts in school and district improvement through data use, evaluation of instruction, and developing district and school improvement plans. NECC's work focuses on bringing evidence-based resources into this work.
RIDE has long tapped the Center for assistance in developing its comprehensive framework for educating English language learners (ELLs), including work revising the state's regulations (approved 2008), piloting an ELL District Monitoring System and tools such as a desk audit and interview protocols, and drafting an ELL guidance document. Rhode Island also engaged NECC in building capacity for implementing its ELL framework through an educators' and stakeholders' professional learning community.
