Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) continues to tap the Center for assistance in developing its capacity to meet the needs of its English language learners (ELLs). In August 2008, the state Board of Regents passed a set of new regulations on the education of ELLs; NECC worked closely with RIDE and stakeholders throughout the state to revise the existing regulations. Work now is focused on helping RIDE develop guidance for implementing the regulations and create monitoring procedures aligned with the new regulations.
NECC is also working to build capacity across the state by creating a Professional Learning Community among district ELL directors. In connection with this work, NECC is assisting RIDE in its Promising Practices Initiative (PPI) to identify and share successful strategies.
