Maine
NECC's primary focus in its partnership with the Maine Department of Education (DOE) is to improve classroom instructional practices to meet rigorous and college- and career-ready standards and to support the use of high-quality assessments that are valid and reliable for all students. NECC will assist in convening department personnel and regional educators to profile research evidence and exemplars of practice that point to increased academic achievement and improved graduation rates for all students.
Previous NECC work entailed developing rubrics for the state's Learning Results standards-based learning initiative, intended to guide instruction and inform meaningful formative classroom assessments. The Center continues to assist the state's Migrant Education Program in developing a needs assessment recommended by the USED Office of Migrant Education, beginning with gathering information and devising guidelines.
NECC has also assisted Maine DOE staff in engaging institutions of higher education in online and face-to-face examination and improvement of performance standards and teacher preparation to address the needs of Maine's diverse population. Other previous work includes consulting with the state Accountability Team in developing district accountability procedures and working with the Maine Continuous Improvement Priority Schools (CIPS) team to offer online professional development for schools in monitored and priority status.
