What Education Leaders Should Know About Virtual Ed

A brief course on virtual education policy and practice will be held this month with input from national experts Susan Patrick, President and CEO of the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), and Susan Lowes, Director of Research and Evaluation at the Institute for Learning Technologies at Columbia University.

Co-sponsored by NECC and the Center on Instruction, the course will be conducted both synchronously and asynchronously over a three-week period and cover topics such as where and how K-12 online learning used and how online learning can help engage diverse learners. No prior experience with online learning is necessary. Participation is expected to take about three hours per week. First priority is given to educators in New England. Registration is limited to 25 participants and closes on January 10. If the course is over-enrolled, NECC will announce plans to run additional sections in the spring and fall of 2012. To register, visit http://registrations.rmcres.com and enter the Event/Form ID: NECOIVE (not case sensitive). For more information, please contact Kirsten Peterson, kpeterson@edc.org, 617-618-2780.

Podcast: Considerations In Measuring Educator Effectiveness: A Conversation With Stanley Rabinowitz

Stanley Rabinowitz, Ph.D. of the Accountability and Assessment Comprehensive Center, met with New England and New York Comprehensive Center staff recently on the topic of educator evaluation. His talk, available as a 25-minute podcast or transcript, discusses what states can do, given that policy is ahead of the field on this topic. Prompted by Race to the Top, many states are now committed to develop systems for evaluating educator effectiveness. Rabinowitz distinguishes between levels of data reliability and lays out a research agenda for a “model neutral” system that includes not only assessment but also observations and methods to make observations and performance measures valid and reliable.
